hello to all.
i have just returned from my pectus operation which i had on tuesday 22nd June at Newcastle Freeman Hospital. the procedure was carried out by Mr Bernard. i was supposed to have the operation on the 1st July but i recieved a call from the hospital on monday and they asked me to come in that day to stay in overnight for tests and then have the op. when i found out i thought "no way" im not ready. but when i thought about it, i could get it out of the way. i went in 2 hours later. i have had a modivied ravitvh without a bar. Mr Bernard beleives that the bar causes too much pain and instead opts for mesh. this way they beleive scar tissue will harden and keep it in place. the operarion looks to be a success. obviously as expected it isnt perfect. however i look thinner than i thought i would and i havent lost weight. the pain control was superb. there was pain on the day and moving at first was a nightmare. i was on morphene only in the high dependency unit for the first night and then i moved into the normal ward where i started a course of parecetemol, diclofenic, nefopam, and codiene. i am pain free but i must be drugged up to the hilt.
the service i recieved from the hospital was absolutely top class. the surgeons are not pectus specialist but cardio thoracic. the hospital is a centre of excellence. i was on a ward with three other gentlemen all about sixty years of age. one guy had a quadruple bypass and another had a lung taken out. the experience of being on the ward hepled and certainly put my op into perspective.
if any of you out there have questions feel free to ask. i hope i can be of help as others experiences has helped me along greatly.
